Well, after too many interviews, and a few weeks of stress, I have finally secured employment for the summer for my first work term with my school program.
I've accepted an offer to work at P3 Architecture in Regina, which means that in all likelihood Crys and I will be moving to Regina come summer, and will stay there until I graduate from school in 2009. P3 was my top choice of firms to work for, so I am pleased that they offered me a position. I will be primarily be given drafting (AutoCAD) duties, but they say that I will have a variety of tasks to do, including (hopefully) some project-management.
How I got the job was rather interesting. The normal process is that you apply for all the available jobs you wish to, and then the employers choose whom they will interview. On the selected day, the employer comes to the school and interviews the applicants.
In the case of P3, however, there was no interview. Unbeknownst to anyone, they "interviewed" their applicants without us realizing we were being evaluated. There was an industry "meet-and-greet" supper that was held back in January. It was completely voluntary, and it meant buying tickets and driving to Regina. Only a handful of us did, and the P3 arhcitects were there as well. Only those of us who attended the supper were considered for the job, and they made their decision based on how well we interacted with them.
I got lucky, and managed to get myself seated at their table and chatted with them over the meal. I found out after the fact that that meal was the interview, and that I was the one they had selected. Just goes to show the power of schmoozing!
