The Walrus

I have had a nearly over-powering desire to have a magazine subscription for quite a long time. For at least a couple of years I've been looking for a mag that I can identify with. I have thought about getting either Time or Macleans, or perhaps some sort of architectural magazine. But I can't decide. I want something more or less Canadian, and something with some substance. I like architecture, but I also want to stay in touch with current events. And I don't want too many ads. Some of the more political magazines can be too boring sometimes, and I don't always want heavy articles to read. You know, a good bathroom or before bed reader.

I borrow magazines from the library sometimes, to give them a test run. You can't take out the current issues, but all other copies can be signed out for three weeks, plus a renewal or two. But for some reason, it still doesn't feel good enough. There is some sort of primal drive within me to want to permanently own the magazine, which is odd, since I likely recycle it after a few months. What is it about having a magazine arrive in your mail that says, "I am a magazine subscriber, and proud of it?"

Right now I have borrowed a couple of copies of The Walrus Magazine. It seems to have a blend of current events, arts and culture, technology, and so on. I'll let you know what I think.

It's good. A nice balance of articles covering a variety of subjects, though its all fairly 'wordy.' Not much fluff, which is good.
Definitely a strong candidate for a subscription.
