Burj Dubai

This isn't the cerebral post as I hoped my first few might be, but I didn't want to wait an entire week while I researched my first building. I decided I will try to post every Sunday, because I typically have more free time on the weekends to compile what I may have gathered.

Anyway, I came across this image quite accidentally, but it really captured my attention. It is a picture of the core of the city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with fog rolled in over it. Dubai is one of the richest cities in the world, and has seen an explosion of construction like no other in recent history. I learned, as I investigated this image, that one year ago this month, Dubai Tower surpassed the 1,825' storey tall CN Tower in Toronto in height to become the tallest free-standing building on Earth. Its construction will be completed in 2009, but its current height is at 2,257'! It's finished height will not be announced until construction is complete.

My biggest question is, "How many labourers will have died constructing it, and will that be a world record as well?" Dubai is not known for its fair treatment of labourers, the majority of which come from places like India.
