Interlude

Hunting 2008 - Mossbank, SK
Mowchenko farm (cudo's to Joel and Cheryl for their hospitality)

The sun rising. It's good to get out of the city from time to time.

A coulee near a dried up lake bed. This is where I expected to be hunting. But most of the deer were in the field instead.

The quarry in the distance. They insisted I stalk them in an open instead of the coulee. It's much harder to get close to deer when the only cover is 16" scrub grass and mud.

The doe on the left was my primary target. The buck was tempting, but my licence didn't allow me to shoot him. The trick was to get them to stand up once I got close enough to get a shot, without spooking them entirely. It took me 1.5 hours of crawling and belly crawling to get within 75 yards, then by luck or divine intervention, the noise of children playing a very long ways away was enough to get them to get up from their mid-morning snooze.

After the commotion, the second group of deer 100 yards to my right flank stuck around and were curious enough for me fill my second tag.

The result, and nice big doe, and a smaller spiker buck. Hmm mmm, sausage is on the way

As a prologue, we were able to get Joel a small doe as well. Three deer, 2 mornings. Not too bad me thinks.
