I am trying to come up with a new acronym for SIAST, and as such, I am looking for your creative input. Let me set the stage briefly for my motives, so that you may best understand.
One of the reason I chose to attend SIAST to become an architect (eventually) is because I saw it as solving some of the inherent probelms I saw in the university system. I had actually applied to the University of Calgary before I discovered the program I am in now, and was going to pursue architecture through them.
Here is what I would have needed to do.
1. Get into the undergraduate program, and specialize in the pre-arch program. With any luck, graduate with a four-year undergrad B.A. I may have been able to transfer my 60 credits from the UofS, and only needed 2 more years.
2. APPLY, to the master's program of Environmental Design.
3. Not necessarily get in, because it is a limited availability program. Keep trying for as many years as it takes, meanwhile, keeping taking classes.
4. Get into the program, and spend 3-4 more years before being able to write accreditation exams.
TOTAL TIME: min. 5 years, max ? years COST: lots and lots: guessing $40, 000 +.
SIAST requirements:
1. Apply. Usually takes 1-2 years to get in due to waiting list. Only highschool needed.
2. Spend a total of 2 1/2 calendar years (3 school years).
3. 13 months of the 32 total months is spent in employment working for a firm or a construction company....making $.
4. Graduate, and continue working for a firm. Meanwhile, enter the Architectural Syllabus Program, taking module classes for 5 years while working.
5. At the end of 5 years, I'm an architect.
Total time: 8 years max. COST : $15,000 for SIAST, plus Syllabus program ? plus earning $.
So, I chose SIAST. Now that I am in it, the program tries to cover way too much in way too little time. It could be easily streteched to 4 years as a degree. They are killing themselves teaching at such a pace, and killing us with the work load.
My theory: SIAST wants to graduate people to get them into the system so they can start paying taxes and adding to the economy. They're in too big a rush to make us productive citizens, and I feel the course suffers as a consequence. Slow it down, teach us more thoroughly, and we'll be healthier and happier citizens as a result.
So, I want to re-name SIAST, with your help. Here's what I've got so far. Filled in lines are still up for negotitation.
