My life in this final semester has been focused around the institution of the library. I have to do a set of drawings for a library, and prepare a 15-page technical report I've entitled "A Study of the Interface Between Libraries and Galleries." It is basically three case-studies from 2 buildings in Regina and one in Moose Jaw.
Anyway, during my research, I came across a debate that the library as a societal institution is wrestling with:
Should libraries protect books from harm, and encourage people towards a higher level of reading, or, Should Libraries provide the public with what they demand, including internet access and the like?
The focus of the role of the library, of course, will then affect its architectural style, since they should look like the service they offer...ie. traditional or modern or post-modern.
The Regina Public Library is likely wrestling with this, as they are wanting to either re-build or renovate their existing central location.
So, the question to you is this. If you had a choice, which of the following would you want your library to look like? (click each for a link to find out where it is)
