I received this book as a present from my wife for our anniversary last fall. It is intended to accompany the carving set I received from the folks a number of years ago, which I have yet to use. The main reason I haven't used them yet is because I don't really know how...thus the book. Now all I need is wood that is appropriate to practice on.My dream would be able to work half time, and to stay at home half time to work in my (future) wood-shop. Alas, my kind of career is the kind where you pretty much need to be there all the time. Maybe in ten years when I become an architect I can figure out something to make my dream a reality.
I often get creative urges, but I feel so futile when I want to draw or sketch ideas. But when it comes to wood, if I have the time, I feel much more able to create what I imagine. I am hoping that carving will be something that I can pursue as a small hobby, where I don't need to have a big wood-shop (which I likely won't have for some time to come), and will satisfy my desire to create.

As Shakespeare, thru creative imagination, was to words, you in time, thru a creative mind, will be to wood design.
What you need to get into is whittling! You can do it in your spare time virtually anywhere. I took a course in high school... it was fun!
There was a course in whittling!?
